Kitchen Remodel Ideas: Updating Our 1980s Florida Kitchen

There’s something I truly love about bringing new life to an older home. So many houses built in the 1980s were designed with closed-off kitchens, outdated cabinetry, laminate countertops, and very little storage. While those designs reflected the trends of the time, I see today’s homeowners wanting something completely different — bright, open spaces that feel stylish, functional, and comfortable for everyday living.

This was exactly the goal with our 1980s kitchen remodel in our new Florida home.
Saying Goodbye to the Original Layout
The original kitchen had all the classic features of the mid-1980s: old cabinets, outdated finishes, a bulky fan light, and very little prep space. The room felt cramped despite having a decent footprint, and the lack of an island made entertaining difficult.

One of the biggest priorities during our remodel was adding an island to the kitchen in order to create a more practical layout for daily living. Florida homes are often designed for gathering with family and friends, so we needed our kitchen to become a more functonal piece of our home that would make prepping food for ourselves and our guests a breeze.

Installing New Cabinets for a Fresh Coastal Feel
Replacing our cabinets completely transformed the room. The old cabinetry was removed and replaced with bright modern cabinets that instantly made the space feel larger and lighter.

Our new design focused on:
- Increased storage and counter top space
- Soft-close drawers and doors
- Taller upper cabinets for added functionality
- Cleaner lines and a more timeless appearance
The lighter cabinet color also reflects Florida’s natural sunlight beautifully, helping our kitchen feel airy and inviting throughout the day.
Adding a Functional Kitchen Island

One of the most impactful upgrades was the addition of a brand-new kitchen island along with a modern ceiling fan with lights and remote for added convenience.
The island created:
- Extra countertop workspace
- Additional storage underneath
- Seating for casual dining and entertaining
- Better traffic flow throughout the kitchen
Now our kitchen serves as both a cooking space and a social hub. Whether preparing meals, helping kids with homework, or hosting guests, the island quickly became the heart of our home. We added these comfortable saddle stools (pictured below) to our counter height island.

For many older Florida homes, adding an island is one of the best ways to modernize the kitchen while dramatically improving functionality.
Upgrading to Stainless Steel Appliances
No kitchen transformation is complete without updated appliances. The outdated units were replaced with sleek stainless steel appliances that instantly elevated the overall look of the space.

Our new appliances not only improved energy efficiency but also gave our kitchen a clean, high-end appearance that pairs perfectly with the updated cabinetry and island design.
Popular upgrades included:
- A stainless steel refrigerator
- Modern slide-in range
- Quiet dishwasher
- Built-in microwave
The cohesive finish tied the entire remodel together and added lasting value to our home.
A Kitchen Designed for Modern Florida Living
The completed remodel feels completely different from the original 1980s kitchen. What was once old and outdated is now bright, open, and welcoming.

This renovation proves that even older Florida homes can be transformed into stylish modern spaces without losing their charm. By replacing cabinets, adding an island, and upgrading to stainless steel appliances, the kitchen became more functional, more beautiful, and far better suited for today’s lifestyle.
Whether you’re planning a full kitchen renovation or simply looking for inspiration, updating an older kitchen can dramatically improve both the appearance and value of your home.
In Florida, where kitchens are often the center of family gatherings and entertaining, investing in a thoughtful remodel is always worth it.

A Dedicated Charging Station for Modern Convenience
One of the most practical additions to the new kitchen was a small charging station console table designed to keep everyday devices organized and accessible.

Instead of phones, tablets, and other electronics cluttering the countertops, the dedicated charging area provides a convenient place to power devices while keeping the kitchen looking clean and organized. The compact table blends seamlessly with the new design while adding functionality that today’s homeowners appreciate.
This simple feature has quickly become one of the most-used spots in the kitchen. Whether charging a phone, storing a tablet, or creating a designated drop zone for keys and small essentials, the charging station helps keep the main workspace free of distractions and clutter.
It’s a small addition that makes a big difference in everyday life and perfectly complements the modern updates throughout the remodeled kitchen.
